This post is for my midterm exam of DGAH 110 Hacking the Humanities course at Carleton College. In order to create a subdomain, I used Installatron to install WordPress onto the corresponding website address which is midterm.kims3.sites.carleton.edu. The theme was set naturally by WordPress, but I left it the way it was because I liked it.

The dataset I used was from the book “Travels through the Interior Parts of North America, in the Years 1766, 1767 and 1768”, the author being Jonathan Carver. The primary source of this text is Project Gutenberg.

I opened the file on Open Refine but the file seemed very clean already, so I did not go through any data cleaning or formatting. I went through the text to see if I should remove any words, but I thought that leaving the text file as it is would give me a more clear explicit analysis, without manipulating any of the data. The dataset I used is here. I used Voyant tools to find the most frequently used word in the text file, and the result is embedded in this post. The word that was most frequently used was “Indians”, probably because the author was traveling North America from 1766 to 1768. I used Voyant tools to find the most frequently used word because I was curious what represented the interior parts of North America during those years.

Through the usage of Voyant, I could see what the general trend was in North America for the time period between 1766 to 1768. Words like Indians, lake, and river show the trend of the time, and also the general themes of the journal itself.
